New York City’s communities are strong; its families are resilient. Sometimes, though, prolonged exposure to adversity (known as “toxic stress”) can disrupt the development of strong parent-child bonds, with potential consequences for children’s healthy development. Our approach to community engagement promotes positive outcomes for New York City’s families through the evidence-based Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) parent coaching approach.
By partnering with families over the course of 10 hour-long sessions, we help parents interact sensitively and responsively to their young children. We also connect families with additional resources in their communities. What results are stronger families, healthier communities, and healing from the effects of toxic stress.
What is Responsive Parenting?
- Responding sensitively when your baby is upset
- Following your baby’s lead and delighting in what he/she is doing
Parents who care sensitively and responsively for the children foster the development of secure attachments. This helps protect children from the effects of toxic stress.
Through participation in ABC, children:
- Show improved behavior and attention in school;
- Are more likely to graduate from high school; and
- Are primed for better physical and mental health throughout life.
Parents also grow in their confidence and show reductions in symptoms of depression. Connections to additional resources alleviate stressors, creating emotional space to focus on family connections.
On the community level, graduates of our program have opportunities to take part in community building and advocacy initiatives. Our work with families also forms the basis of our collective impact engagement, creating and strengthening support networks for communities to thrive.
Power of Two is leading community-based dissemination of the evidence-based Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-Up (ABC) parent coaching intervention. ABC is strengths-based, focusing on what parents are already doing right and helping them to interact sensitively and responsively with their children. These are the building blocks of strong parent-child attachments.
